Irish Milers Club at
Irish Schools Championships

5th June Tullamore

WOW is all I can say after what was probably the best day ever for the Irish Milers Club.

A senior European Standard achieved by David McCarthy in the 800m and two World Junior qualifying times in a quite staggering 1500m men’s race

Where to start??

800m

Well, how about the Mens A 800m. Brilliantly paced by Feidhlim Kelly through a fast 52 second first lap the two David MCcarthys led with Alan O’Brien in 3rd. David McCarthy (Le CHeile) kept the boot down and won this fantastic race in a European Senior Qualifying time of 1.48.18. Just outside this standard was Alan O’Brien with a pb of 1.48.47 with Dave McCarthy from City of Derry club 3rd in 1.49.29.

The men’s B race was won in a solo run by Daire Bermingham followed by Alex Flynn in 1.56.84 and Ronan Kearns in a pb of 1.58.56

The women’s race, badly hit by withdrawals was run in conjunction with the men’s B and was paced the whole way by Ray Hynes who led Kelly McNiece to a near pb time of 2.03.96 followed by Orla Drumm and Siobhan Evistone

Mens 1500m

Statistics? SEVEN guys broke 3.48. Two got the qualifying standards for the World Juniors (Paul Robinson and Darren MCBrearty), AND two lads absolutely SMASHED their PBS by a huge margin. Patrick Brennan and Noel Collins take a bow. Winning the race was the fast improving Rory Chesser in a 3.45.08 with 0.7 of a second covering four guys. With 23 in the race, nineteen of them went sub four minutes.

A staggering race and it must rank highly in the annals of Irish race history.
