Irish Schools 2009
Irish Schools
Tullamore
Saturday 30 May
The Irish Schools Athletics Association (ISAA) are kindly hosting the Irish Milers Club at their finals in Tullamore this Saturday. The hosting of this event initially developed over five years ago when Brendan Hackett approached the ISAA. Since then, the highlight of the event has seen local star James Nolan and two Australian athletes running a sub four minute mile in the presence of Sir Roger Bannister in 2004 on the 60th anniversary of the first sub four minute mile. Last year saw one of the closest races in years with Nolan just pipping up and coming stars David Mc Carthy and Mark Christie in front of newly elected Taoiseach Brian Cowen. This years event again showcases a number of former Irish Schools stars such as Mark Christie, John Coghlan, Anthony Lieghio and Craig Murphy. Full entries can be viewed in the below PDF. The IMC Tent will be placed on the hill beside the finish line and athletes should collect their numbers there from 12.30 pm onwards.

PB's galore as temperatures soar at IMC races
IMC / Crusaders GV Ryan Meeting
Irishtown
Friday 22 May
It was a balmy 21 degrees, no wind and blue skies when the athletes arrived in Iirshtown for the first IMC meet of 2009. A perfect night for racing and the records that followed proved that.
First IMC race of the night saw 15 athletes take to the field in the mens A 1500m. The race was tight and competitive the whole way with young Paul Robinson edging in front of Alan O'Brien (Nat Indoor 1500m Champ) and Conor Healy in the home straight. With 50m to go a 5m gap had opened but Alan changed gear and just edged Paul out of his win on the line. Huge celebrations erupted for Paul as he had just achieved the European Junior qualifying time.
A field of 10 lined up next for the ladies 1500m, great to see the pace making being done by a lady, Rose-Ann Galligan. Charlotte French O'Carroll set her sights on winning from the start but the win was almost in doubt when Aoife Brady led a late surge in the last lap to finish a close second, Rebecca French O'Carroll following Aoife overtook Ciara Durkan in the finishing straight to claim 3rd position.
The mens B 1500m was next, 16 went to the line, including Hazel Murphy seeking and earning a PB. Michael Mc Killop earned his win, and PB, after travelling from Belfast for the race. Like Charlotte he followed the pacemaker and just held off fast improving John Travers, who took 7 second off his PB. New to track athlete James Mc Fadden finished 3rd break 4 minutes with a blistering last 150m.
Last event of the evening, with all events run on time, saw the mens A & B 3,000m with 30 athletes lining up. An exciting battle ensued with Brendan O'Neill shocking the more fancied runners (and the commentator!) of Sean Connolly and Mark Kirwan with a fast early pace and an opening 30 second 200m. The trio broke from the field and a fascinating duel ensued with Sean Connolly the eventual winner. Worth noting, Emmet Dunleavy entered the last lap in 9th and finished in 4th just 2 seconds behind Mark Kirwan - wonder if anyone got a clock on his last 400m?
The B race was paced by Mark Christie with fellow Mullingar teammate Jake Byrne hoping for the qualifying time for the Junior Europeans. Jake brought this race home in 8.30 and for a 16 year old looked very comfortable, watch this guy!! Gavin Downney, Ferrybank AC and Andrew Agnew from Abbey AC battled for 2nd and 3rd finishing with only 0.2 secs dividing them.
With so many athletes travelling long distances for the evenings races the IMC were delighted to see 29 rewarded with PB's.
