Almost 90 athletes will take to the start line tomorrow night in Irishtown for the second Irish Milers Club meeting of the year with a large Northern Ireland continent also traveling south for event. Five 800m races and two 3000m races are to be staged with the men's A 800m topping the bill. IMC At Irish Schools
Irish Schools
Tullamore
Saturday 30 May
Glorius sunshine in Tullamore provided excellent conditions for the feature IMC races at yesterday's Irish Schools Finals.
The men's 1500m got proceedings underway with Joe Warne pacing the Mark Christie through the 1000m mark in 2.30 with the remainder of the field strung out behind them. Christie was strong over the final 500m and finished comfortably in an impressive season opener of 3.45.52 which bodes well for him for the upcoming season. An exciting finish between DCU students and former schools champions John Coghlan and Craig Murphy saw both athletes rewarded with excellent new personal bests with each athlete running almost five seconds quicker than ever before with 3.50.85 and 3.50.96 placings.
Michael Mulhare and Thomas Fitzpatrick also set new personal best marks in fourth and fifth. Undoubtedly the most exciting race of the day was the men's 800m where Simon Taggart paced the field through the bell in 53 seconds with all the major players bunched behind him including Eoin Everard, Anthony Lieghio, Alan O'Brien and Feidhlim Kelly. When the pacer stepped off the track Everard took the lead and looked to pull away from the field, however National Indoor 1500m champion, Alan O'Brien came through over the last 50m to steal the win in 1.51.33, just outside his personal best.
Everard was second followed by Lieghio, who set a personal best, and the dogged Feidhlim Kelly who gave 100% as usual. Up and coming Letterkenny AC athlete Daniel Mooney ran another personal best in a time of 1.54.56 just ahead of ParaOlympic Champion Michael Mc Killop who also broke new ground running a 1.55.45 all time best. The ladies 800m was beset by withdrawals however Laura Scriven and Christine Long had a great battle when pacer Joe Warne stepped off the track with 200m to go. Scriven burst past leader Long and held on for a strong victory in 2.14.39. Overall eight new personal bests were set with nine seasons bests. James Nolan and Eamonn Coghlan presented prizes to the athletes.
For the fifth consecutive year the IMC sponsored the senior boys and girls 1500m races with all 12 finalists receiving a specially comissioned IMC Medal. The IMC would again like to thank John Shields, Des Rogers, Enda Fitzpatrick and the ISAA team for hosting the club this year.
The next IMC meeting is planned for June 24th (permit pending) in Irishtown where a series of 800m races for all standards as well as a shot putt and long jump will be held. This meeting saw almost 80 athletes compete last year with over 35 personal bests set on the night. Details will follow on the IMC site in the coming days.
