Leevale T&F Meet April 14th

Athletes and members,

Our friends in Leevale are hosting their annual T&F meet on Saturday April 14th. This year they are putting on a mile race and hope to attract athletes capable of breaking the 4 minute marker!

The current plan is to have cash prizes for the winners and a bonus for a sub 4 minute mile. Pacemakers will be provided to assist in making this the fastest mile race in Ireland in 2012.

Pre entry is essential so keep an eye on their website for further details: http://www.leevale.org/2012/leevale-2012-satsun-1415-april/

They are also arranging a deal for overnight accommodation and a meal at the presentations on the Saturday night.

A race to put in the diary!

Frank Horwill RIP

The IMC has regretfully learned of the death of Frank Horwill (renowned coach and founder of the BMC). His influence on athletics has been tremendous. Brendan Hackett (founder of the IMC) has written the following….

It is with great sadness that I learned of Frank Horwill’s passing. He was unique in the true sense of the word. He was a one off and they definitely threw away the mould after Frank. He is probably the last of the great generation of great British coaches that included the likes of Peter Coe and Harry Wilson. They were at the root of a golden era of middle distance running when athletes like Coe, Ovett, Cram and Elliott ruled the world
I first came across Frank through his writing. As a young athletics coach hungry for knowledge his articles made complete sense to me. He presented a method that followed sound principles and could be adjusted to suit all types of athletes. He was a practical coach who got results. He was logical, yet innovative and he wanted to share his ideas. He loved athletics and you could see he was a bit special from his writing. He was what we affectionately say in Ireland “a character.
I began to apply his methods and the rewards were quickly reaped. All of the athletes I coached were improving, from the 800m runners to the 5k specialists. I began to investigate the British Milers Club and I arranged to bring two athletes over to the Wythenshawe meet in 1997. I hoped I might meet Frank and I bought a bottle of Irish whiskey at the airport on departure just in case.
I heard Frank before I saw him. This guy with a cap was roaring times at every athlete in every race at the 300m mark. I was fascinated how he was calculating the times. Had he a special watch?
“If you run a 68 lap you will break 9 minutes”. “You need to increase the pace by 1 second to break 3.50”.
It didn’t matter what grade or what distance the race was, he seemed to be at ease with times. I asked somebody who he was and was delighted to finally put a face to the man who was inspiring me. The two athletes that I had travelled with ran pb’s so we were all in good form. I went looking for Frank after the last race. I introduced myself, presented him with the whiskey and so began a fascinating friendship.
We were staying at the same hotel and after a late night I knew all of the BMC officials as Frank introduced me to everybody as his Irish friend. We were the only Irish athletes who had travelled to that meet. We came to every BMC Grand Prix after that and more and more Irish followed us. They were great nights. The athletes would run fast times and I would spend a great evening with Frank and his colleagues. A couple of years later at the BMC Grand Prix in Watford I stood at the 300m mark with Frank as race after race flashed past. I turned to Frank at the end and told him that there were over 50 Irish athletes there that night. Later in the hotel he told me it was time to start the Irish Milers Club.

The Irish Milers Club began as an idea in 2000 and Frank got as much kick out of its development as we did. I would invite Frank to Dublin to stay with me for a few days and he loved those visits. He would go to Irish races and he would enjoy meeting athletes. He would quiz them on all of their PB’s and then predict what times they should be running for each distance. It was amazing how many of his predictions came true. He would tell stories of the early days of the BMC and he couldn’t get over how history was repeating itself 40 years later in Ireland. He relished the battles and we were kindred spirits.
These visits showed the many sides to Frank’s character. He would get down on his hands and knees and play with my children for hours. He would pick up the phone every time it rang and say in his grand posh voice,
“The Hackett residence, the butler speaking”
He would visit pubs and invariably start chatting up groups of girls. It didn’t seem to matter what age they were. Everybody enjoyed his company. He would then introduce me as his driver and order me to fetch the car as he offered to drive these young ladies to a nightclub. He loved animals and he would get distressed if he saw a stray dog or an animal that looked undernourished. I would have to take him off to buy food for dogs he encountered.
In 2006 I became the Chief Executive of the Irish Athletics. He called me up and announced that he couldn’t talk to me anymore as I was now part of the establishment. He had spent most of his life fighting against authorities for his ideas. We laughed about this. It gave me a great kick when Peter Thompson asked me to write a letter of support for Frank as he sought to get recognition for him on the Honours List. I relished the task. It was with great pleasure that I was able to phone him a few months ago and tell him that I was no longer speaking with him as he was now part of the establishment and I had since resigned my position. Frank was awarded an MBE in September.
I spent a day with him in August and he was in great form; inquisitive, witty, provocative, caring, flirty (with the waitresses in the restaurant) and he still had that twinkle in his eye. That’s how I will remember him.

Francis was much more than an athletics coach. He was a loyal friend, an innovator, a teacher, a shrewd judge of character, a joker, intelligent, courageous, caring, a man with a childlike enthusiasm and an inspiration. It will be some fun in the next world when he teams up with his old friends and adversaries. So long comrade and on behalf of my family, his friends in Ireland and all of the athletes he helped directly and indirectly we would like to thank you and wish you well in the next life.

Entries for the June 18th meet at Irishtown Stadium will close this Sunday June 12th. The timetable and start lists will be available early next week.

It is likely there will be four Men’s 800m races, a Men’s 5000m and a Women’s 800m. The Women’s 1500m has a low number of entries and may be cancelled. Update to follow on Monday.

Sun 05 June 11

IMC/GV Ryan Crusaders Meet

Entries are now open for the next IMC meet being held at Irishtown Stadium on Sat 18th June starting at 5.30pm.

A night of top class 800m races is on offer with the feature race being the inaugural Civil Service AC/Noel Carroll 800m race with a prize structure to encourage fast times.

Euro 75 to all athletes breaking 1.50, Euro 125 to all athletes breaking 1.49 and Eur 200 to all athletes breaking 1.48. A perpetual trophy will also go to the winner.

Details of the Noel Carrol race and of the reasons for hosting this race are in the previous web site update.

There will also be a Mens 5,000m race and thanks to the sponsorship of Raheny Shamrocks AC the IMC have acquired the services of Mark Christie to pace this race.

The meet will also include a MSB AC sponsored Women’s 800m and a 1500m. The quality of the Women’s race in Tullamore on June 4th should see a big entry for these races but if there is insufficient demand for two races then the least popular race will be removed from the meet.

As usual entries should be sent to irishmilersclub@gmail.com and should include Name, Club, DOB, Event and PB/SB with details of where these times were achieved.

Sun 05 June 11

Father of the Marathon, Master of the Half Mile

Noel Carroll meant different things to different people.

To some he was the outspoken voice of Dublin Corporation. Many remember the famous “if you live too near water then you should expect to get wet” retort to those who complained that the Corporation were not doing enough to hold back the flood tide. It enraged those who hanker after a nanny state.

To others, he was the inspiration and guiding light behind a fantastic sporting occasion that lives with us today i.e. the Dublin City Marathon.

He was a thorn in the side of the governing body of athletics, as he continually sided with the athlete’s point of view and publicly rebuked, with great passion and sensibility, any unworthy or unjust decrees (and there were many) from the then governing body, the BLE.

To us, in the Irish Milers, he is a badly missed ally, as we know that he would have stood firmly at our side as we battled the many obstacles placed in our path in our short 11 year history. Noel Carroll, Chairman – The Irish Milers Club – of course he would.

And to the athletic aficionados he will surely be remembered as a top class 800m and 400m athlete. He was also in later life, coach of many leading athletes including the Irish 800m record holder David Matthews and James Nolan.

The Irish Milers Club (IMC), with the support of his club Civil Service AC, wish to honour Noel’s memory and legacy with the inaugural Noel Carroll 800m track race Sat 18th June in Irishtown Stadium at the Irish Milers Club/GV Ryan Crusaders Meet.

The race is designed to bring together the top Irish 800m athletes and produce a performance and time that reflect the prevailing high standard of Irish middle distance running. To encourage a fast time we will be paying cash prizes to athletes who break 1.50. € 75 will go to athletes breaking 1.50, € 125 for those who break 1.49 and € 200 for those who break 1.48.

It is our desire that this race will be an annual event and become renowned as the most competitive and fastest 800m race in Ireland.

Noel’s Honours
Three European indoor titles 800m, 1966 to 1968.
Three AAA titles.
Eight Irish National Titles, 5 over 800m and three over 400m
Two Olympics, Tokyo 1964 and Mexico 1968
PB’s – 1.46.6 (880 yards) and 46.83 400m

The final IMC venture of the 2010 season saw us team up with Athletics Northern Ireland to organise the holding of a BMC Grand Prix in the Mary Peters Track in Belfast.

The final IMC venture of the 2010 season saw us team up with Athletics Northern Ireland to organise the holding of a BMC Grand Prix in the Mary Peters Track in Belfast.

The event was superbly set up by the well oiled machine that is the BMC and hosted in a splendid manner by Athletics Northern Ireland and all ably supported by the IMC

For those who came to compete and indeed to spectate, this was a truly magnificent event which saw many personal bests. For the 800 metres the men and women events set the fastest times of the BMC season with a 1.47.49 run by Gareth Warburton and two 2.01 ‘s run by Emma Jacskon and Stacey Smith.

For the Irish athletes pbs were set by many including Alan O’Brien, Sean Connolly, Tom Fitzpatrick, Pat McCartan, Eoin Flynn, Patrick Brennan and Hazel Murphy to name but a few .

Full results at the link below.

And now I am off to Barcelona for the Europeans BUT hook up with our Facebook and keep in touch as we may have news soon of some new ventures over the Winter months!!!

I hope that all our athletes enjoyed the IMC races this summer.

Finally, I would like to thank my fellow IMC Committee members, Crusaders AC, CLonliffe Harriers, Irish Schools Athletics Association, the BMC and Athletics Northern Ireland for their terrific co-operation as well as the support of the participating athletes, pace makers, coaches, supporters and our growing army of volunteers.

Euro Qualifiers on the cards at Hireco Clonliffe Harriers/IMC Grand Prix

The weather is getting hotter, you can smell the freshly cut grass from the infield, the warm sun on your back, the track spikes are out and the shades are on – this can all only mean one thing – Irish Milers Club meetings and PBs!! Entries have been flooding in over the past two weeks for our next meeting on Ireland’s fastest track in Morton Stadium on July 1st. Owing to the quality of the entries and the times run by Irish athletes in IMC and BMC races this year, we are going BIG TIME at this meeting – by this we mean that we want as many athletes as possible to run PB’s the week before Nationals and also want athletes to qualify for the European Championships in Barcelona. There are meetings in Europe that weekend but why bother when you can now run fast at home in top quality events… just to remind you or in case you didn’t hear; 19 guys ran sub 4 minutes in Tullamore with 7 of them sub 3.48, two ran World Junior Qualifiers and one ran a Euro Qualifier. I can’t remember the last time an Irish distance athlete ran a qualifier for any outdoor event on Irish soil before this.

As previously advertised we are hosting two 800m races (A race – sub 1.55, B race – 1.55 – 2.00) and also two top class 1500m races (A race 3.40 – 3.50, B race 3.50 – 4.00). The A 800m and 1500m races are been paced for Euro qualifying standards. We are going for a 3k for the men (8.00 – 8.40) and both a 800m (2.00 – 2.16) and 1500m (4.15 – 4.45) for the women (Note: If there are not more than 8 entries in the women’s 800m and 1500m we will only be in a position to host one race). We already have the best pacemakers (including the one-piece maestro himself!!) in Ireland and from abroad signed up for the night so what have you got to loose – get your entries in NOW as they close in 10 days time and like our last meeting we expect to be oversubscribed. Entries will only be accepted if the following information is provided: Name, Club, Age, Personal Best, Seasons Best and can be forwarded to Garrett Coughlan (garrett.coughlan@ucd.ie). Entries close the weekend before the event (Sunday 27th June) and no late entries will be accepted.

If you’re not in you can’t win, so get those fingers typing, train hard over the next few weeks, support IMC races at home, run the race, get a PB, watch other athletes run PBs, enjoy the night!!
